This Gun Control Fight Is Different Because It Is Being Led By Parents: via HuffPost http://huff.to/YafyCP The irony of the whole business is that it may be that no constitutionally acceptable solution could have directly prevented Newtown. Lanza didn’t own any guns. It wasn’t clear if he had a mental illness per se. His mother owned all the guns legally, and apparently kept them properly stored in a gun locker. For background checks to include all first degree relatives will be a great expense and may be both too broad and to narrow. It may not cover all the persons who have access to the guns and it may include people who don’t. A registry that updates who is living in a home with guns will be difficult and won’t address people who may intermittently drop by. There may be some legal issues about how you handle situations where someone who could otherwise lawfully own guns is related to somebody who couldn’t. There may be constitutional issues. Particularly when the scenario is very rare, extraordinary lengths to prohibit it are unreasonable. I wouldn’t read the constitution as a ban on common sense. If a trivial infringement does great good it may be justifiable. But great infringements that may prevent extremely rare problems are another issue.
